HARDCAT HOUSE
Glen Iris

Hardcat house – named after the client’s company – is designed as a freestanding composition of varying sized volumes. The tall angular front volume houses the library area. The double height window box incorporates the study area with both study and library flowing out to front balconies. The remainder of the living functions are housed in the long structure of the house, which runs down the site. The volumes are drawn together with cantilevered balcony and roof structures at the front. The north-facing rear courtyard and elevated balcony area have large classical proportions; the balcony being set well back to allow large shaded outdoor areas overlooking the courtyard. The house has resisted the period historical styles found throughout the traditional surrounding context. The building sits confidently within a period streetscape, expressing its modernity.
